Arkansas Darwin Day 2012 is a joint effort of universities and community organizations to host a multi-disciplinary scientific conference and series of science-oriented educational and social events in Little Rock and across the State.
The main purpose of the event is to celebrate Charles Darwin’s achievements and examine their effects; build awareness of evolutionary science; examine the transformation of Darwin’s ideas over the past 150 years; uphold science education and research; and promote science and evidence-based decision-making in all areas of life. More generally, Darwin Day celebrates the advancement of humanity made possible by scientific knowledge, acquired through human curiosity and ingenuity.
Darwin Day will include a variety of activities that will be free and open to the public. The centerpiece of the event will be a conference, hosted by UALR, on Saturday, February 11, 2012. The conference will include a series of lectures, including a keynote speech by Dr. Kevin Padian; student research and poster presentations and awards, science laboratory tours, and workshops. In addition, the Mid-America Science Museum will offer visitors interactive activities that relate to evolution and observation skills. Darwin Day will also include free documentary screenings on scientific topics.
Arkansas Darwin Day 2012 will lay the foundation for a continuing tradition of an annual science-focused multidisciplinary event that will enrich life in Arkansas.
